Good thing Mike cleared up the meaning of UIG by mentioning the parent-child perspective, because, usually, saying "you don't know what you've got till it's gone" is condemning someone to suffer regret for taking things/people for granted. UIG doesn't feel like a song for guilt-tripping, but it's about selflessly giving someone the space to develop (letting go) his/her potential (what you've got).
