Hi, I am posting this on behalf of Derek who cannot access LPA right now due to serious issues with his computer but is able to access AIM:

Hey guys, about an hour or so ago I was going through the internet when suddenly I was hit with a porn pop-up (while not even being on a porn site mind you) and I thought "..stupid popups" and clicked out of it. Well out of my control, suddenly it kept re-opening itself over and over again and me, getting mad...end tasked the sucker, thinking it would stop it. That's when all hell broke loose. Suddenly I couldn't control my computer and I sat there helplessly as it instantly downloaded tons of harmful programs such as a "Free XXX" desktop icon, a 'anti-spyware' program and a "Desktop Search" application (I am quoting all of these apps in the idea that you could possibly look this up or write symantec about it) onto my desktop. Well before I knew it, it changed my desktop to a 'blue screen' (I didnt actually get a blue screen, it was more like a blue screen wallpaper) and I found I was unable to open System Restore, and it doesn't allow me to open my computer so I can backup my files (I was able to open the folders on a non-adminstrator account..but before long it tried to launch the programs associated with the files and the PC crashed), so I'm not sure what to do here. In all my life I've never experienced a virus quite this bad and I'm trying my best to stay calm even though I'm not sure I can fix this.

Luckily for me my AIM still happens to work (however you have to IM me on panoway as zshadowofadoubt isnt working) and if you want to send me help through there you are more than welcome to. Furthermore, I was able to get onto LPA forums' main page but when I went to go to a thread it redirected me to one of those top related searches pages. If there's anything you guys can do to help me, please tell me now. I honestly am not looking forward to formatting my hard drive and if I can possibly run a tool to eradicate this virus I'd be more than happy. Also, the last time I ran safe mode it locked up..so I'm not quite sure about that.

Any suggestions guys? I'm so upset right now that this happened.

I hate it when such situations like that happen. Pop-ups suck. They just completely fuck up your computer and you seem just so helpless...

Go to the nearest computer store. GET IT FIXED. If it's a problem like that, find a store with decent prices right away. You should be unplugging your internet so that your network doesn't get completely infected, and so that more viruses don't get in. Hopefully, this virus you seem to have won't do much damage. Or any more.

That's the best I could do. I'm sorry for you though.

If he was using Internet Explorer, that further indicates that Firefox owns it.

    http://www.merijen.org

scroll down about 1/4 of the page and click on hijackthis 1.99 download and run it. That should clear it up. As for the search bar thing:

    http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshr...r_download.html

cwshredder should take care of that.

If not boot to safe mode (hit F8 a million times on the restart screen) and try a system restore. If you're stillh aving trouble then it's formatting time. Hopefully it won't come to that.

i dont know what kind of virus, mabye .shadow is correct but, have you tried starting in safe mode? Or mabye You should take it to a computer store that can fix this. Formatting looks awfully good because it downloaded loads of "stuff" on the computer. dont instantly get internet, but a firewall, like zonelabs firewall or something like that.

Other then this, formatting is pretty much 3rd to almost nothing.

I've had the same situation before. I don't get it though. Why can't people stop making viruses? Why can't they stop making pop-ups?

Why can't we all just...get along?

Wow, I am so fucking tired right now. I just spent the entire night battling this fricking virus and I literally have no energy at all.

In the end I got through to do a system restore (after much fighting with the virus) and it's weird. After the restore the virus desktop icons are still there but there's...no virus.

The computer is running fine, there's no sign of any of the programs there anymore..but the icons are programs are still downloaded. I ran "Hijack This!" and it didn't seem to find the program (it found about 1000 porn hosts I got rid of though) and Adaware didnt find 173 like it did during the viruses' activation. (Honestly, it froze...but I dont think that has to do with the virus).

So what do you guys think I should do? I want to go to sleep, but I fear when I restart the computer it'll be back and worse than ever. However, if it's not "triggered" anymore..you think I'll be safe until at least tommorrow morning?

I personally think that you should just leave it alone. Doing more work on it will just risk you getting more viruses, or possibly the same virus to kick in. Leave it be. Don't do anything. Disconnect the internet. Go to sleep. Take it to a computer shop in the morning. It'll be fine.

That's the last thing you wanna do. All they'll say is "Oh you're fucked, you're going to have to reformat." ;)

    Good point...

Well, he needs to sleep. You're going to deprive the man of sleep. How about he does nothing and sleeps, and he can continue fixing up the problem tomorrow.

And about the icons, Derek, couldn't you just delete them? That's what I do. It ends up being fine.

I talked to Derek on MSN, he seems to be doing much better. I told him to get some sleep then in the morning do a final scan in safe mode. He should be alright now. :)

I think we're good guys. Thanks to everyone who helped.

A very SPECIAL thank you goes out to in.the.shadows, and tm who..if not for them I probably wouldn't be on here right now.

I know a bulletin has to be out here for this virus because it was very harmful, and if its not already out there as a defined virus I'd be shocked. Like I said, the thing had the power to keep me from accessing many programs, delete my harddrive space by the second, and even change my desktop wallpaper to a fake 'blue screen'.

It battled with Ad-Aware, making it freeze the first time I tried it. However, after I miraculously got through to System Restore it listed that I had 163 instances of spyware..some of which included Malware (Malicious Software), Browser hijack attempts, a windows vunerability and enough tracking cookies to feed the poor kids over seas (mmkay that was wrong of me).

After this..I don't know if I even wanna use IE anymore. Sure Opera looks kind of cluttered..but it's safer then IE. Although fanboys of Firefox and Opera will go back and forth about what is better.
