If we're going to be arguing 'Well you have to listened to it all at once because it's a single piece of work' I'm going to bring up the fact that sometimes taken in at once the album sounds like a disjointed forty five minutes of Linkin Park playing around with as many different kinds of sounds as they could than a truly cohesive record. While "audio gangbang of so many different styles all at once" was probably the entire point of the album, I think an equally valid point would be that on occasion A Thousand Suns sounds like the equivalent of a far less engaging alt-rock Gorillaz album with no guest artists.
