Well I recently got an Ipod Photo and I want to organise all of my artists into accurate genres. I shall list all the artists I wish to put on my Ipod and the genres they are currently under. Please tell me if you disagree with the genre I have put them under.

    AC/DC - Rock
    Adema - Hard Rock
Alien Ant Farm - Pop/Soft Rock
    Alter Bridge – Rock
    Blink 182 – Punk Rock
    Creed – Soft Rock
Demons & Wizards – Progressive Metal
    Electric Six – Power Pop
    Eminem – Rap
    Evanescence – Alternative Hard Rock
    Fozzy – Metal
    Green Day - Punk Rock
    Grey Daze – Soft Rock
    Grinspoon - Rock
    Hoobastank – Rock
    Iron Maiden - Progressive Metal
    Killing Heidi – Soft Rock
    Led Zeppelin - Rock
Limp Bizkit - Alternative Hard Rock/Rap
Linkin Park – Alternative Hard Rock/Rap
    Live – Soft Rock
    Maroon 5 - Soft Rock
    Mest – Punk Rock
    Missy Higgins - Pop
    Muse – Alternative Rock
    Nickelback – Rock
    Nirvana – Grunge
    Pearl Jam – Grunge
    Powder Finger - Soft Rock
    R.E.M. - Pop/Soft Rock
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Pop/Soft Rock
    Seether – Hard Rock
    Stone Sour – Hard Rock
Story Of The Year - Grunge
System Of A Down - Alternative Metal
    The Butterfly Effect - Rock
    The Darkness - Soft Rock
The Killers – Alternative Power Pop
The Living End - Alternative Rock
    The Offspring - Punk Rock
    The Used – Grunge
    Dire Straits – Rock
    U2 - Pop/Soft Rock
    Yellowcard - Punk Rock

I want to avoid labeling artists as just 'Rock'. It seems too vague and common for me. Please help me out, I know that most are probably wrong :p

Classifying bands through genre is a dumb thing to do. What artist wants to be restricted by genre?

So I guess I would disagree with all of them, but that's just my opinion I guess.

No one can really disagree since it's all about your opinion, really.

All the ones you labeled punk rock, I'd say they're all alternative. But of course, that's just me.

It's based on opinion. Just classify the music as you please. I can see a point to classifying music by genre...if you're in the mood to listen to classic rock you want all the songs available with the push of a button.

I, myself, hate subgenres so I usually classify things very generally. Just to show that people classify things very differently.

I'd say Seether was Post Grunge but Hard Rock works too.

Ya well I heard they were Post-Emo-Pre-Core-Pop-Rock-Hip.

On my iPod, I don't use genres. Just select all your tracks go up to file then get info and erase all of the genres.

Demons & Wizards are more "Power Metal" than progressive, and Iron Maiden is much more 80s Thrash/Classic Metal than prog either. Old Metallica is much more prog than Iron Maiden ever has been, and its still classified as Thrash.

Although I have a certain personal liking for classifications, I find that many of my favourite bands are hard to classify. In a sense, "progressive" rock/metal isn't a genre that forces bands to stick to one style or sound...it could be pretty much anything, from Pink Floyd to Opeth to The Mars Volta to Dream Theater. I feel things like Pop/punk and alternative metal force the bands to stick to a certain formula which leaves no room for creativity and growth.

i had always assumed linkin park should be alt-metal/rap..but that's my opinion..

for the bands like blink 182 should be classifyed as pop punk.

I can understand that a lot of you disagree with putting certain artists/bands under genres but this is for my Ipod :p . I want things to be very organised. I would prefer to have the artists on my ipod under the genre that the majority of people would put it under rather than my own opinion. I shall change the Blink 182, Demons & Wizards, Iron Maiden and probably The Killers. Thank you all very much ^_^
