Good god. Who says a Gundam or a revamped dark and brooding Power Rangers with a dash of fun can't work on the big-screen? An amazing set of films being released this year.
i like how they announced it on trillion years in advance + trailer. not. edit: shit, that's a new trailer there. looking fucking fantastic.
So many clichés. Perfect. This is the sort of mind-numbing action film that will score averagely. I might go and watch it now 'cos mecha.
I thought it looked cool, don't get me wrong. With those monters coming out of the water, I was expecting Puff Daddy to be on top of a building rapping to a remix of Led Zepplin's "Kashmir." Maybe it's because giant monster movies have left a cheesy aftertaste in my mouth. Like I said though, I will most likely see it anyways.
Seems decent. It did have a few moments where I was like "that's from avatar, that's from tramsformers, independance day,..."
^ lol. This is Guillermo we're talking about. This film was made to honor the traditions and manga and kaiju films. It's been stated numerous times. I suppose I should have included a disclaimer.
To me it's like The Matrix of Kaiju movies. When I first watched the Matrix I noticed a ton of nods to manga and anime both in costume style, little prop clues, fighting. The last fight scene in Revelations was like DBZ brought to life. Same with Kill Bill. A ton of nods to other martial arts and westerns all the way down to The Bride's yellow jumpsuit. I think he saw no one else was brave enough to do this type of movie so he created a story which he wrapped around what we already know and expect from this sort of thing. The reason it works is because we know about Gundam, Evangelion, Godzilla and so on.
The reason The Matrix worked was because of the unique and compelling script. The reason Kill Bill worked was because of Tarantino's genius. This could go either way right now I think.
It depends on the execution in the film too. This conversation is reminding me of when I saw Godzilla: Final Wars. It's the only Godzilla movie I got really into, and that was because it was so chock full of cliche that it went all the way around and wrapped back to incredibly fun. Other reviews are really polarized though, criticizing how unoriginal it is, so maybe it is a personal thing too. Since I saw that movie though, I've been interested in ones like Pacific Rim, even though PR is probably really different.
