im also loving all of it, but does anyone else love the crazy guitars on Getting Smaller? i like to call that energy
I bought it today and it just blows me away. Before I bought it I only heard 'All the love in the world', 'Everyday is exactly the same' and 'Right where it belongs', but those other songs..like woah lol. I think my favorite is 'Right where it belongs'.
Just finished my first listen of the album. Favorites_ _All The Love in the World. _You Know What You Are? _With Teeth. _The Hand That Feeds. _Right Where it Belongs. _Every Day Is Exactly The Same.
That song is probably the only piece of evidence that Trent may still be on drugs. The CD is just awesome man... up there with Fragile. EDIT: And my vote goes to Right Where It Belongs. Then the rest of the album, as a whole. Although Getting Smaller had to grow on me a bit.
After listening to the album for a while now my top 5 favorites in order are: 01: Everyday Is Exactly The Same 02: You Know What You Are 03: Only 04: All The Love In The World 05: Getting Smaller but they are changing all the time. It's such a great CD, everytime i listen to it i like it so much more.
Bought it yesterday as SOON as I got out of work. My fave tracks: 2 You Know What You Are? 4 The Hand That Feeds 6 Every Day Is Exactly The Same 7 With Teeth 11 The Line Begins To Blur 13 Right Where It Belongs. Just great.
Look at this guys...it's from the latest update of "Access" http://www.nin.com/access/5_05_05/questions07.gif (I would put it in here, but it stretches the forums)
My favorite songs are... 1. Right Where It Belongs 2. The Line Begins To Blur 3. Beside You In Time 4. You Know What You Are? 5. All The Love In The World I think that Everyday Is Exactly The Same starts too quiet and is way too repetitive. It's probably my least favorite on With Teeth.
I've been meaning to work on a review. I'll probably start work on it late tonight. It should be up sometime next week. Or sometime this year, rather.
01:: You know what you are? 02:: Everyday is exactly the same 03:: The hand that feeds 04:: Right were it belongs 05:: All the love in the world
Nine Inch Nails is hard to classify when it comes to a genre. One minute Nine Inch Nails is Industrial Dance (Closer), another minute it's angst-filled hard rock (Ruiner). Maybe that's what keeps us coming back for more. Nine Inch Nails, or rather, Trent Reznor, is always changing and evolving. "Pretty Hate Machine" to "Broken" was a huge evolution in song writing and music for Reznor. "The Downward Spiral" to "The Fragile" was an even bigger change, and alienated most mainstream music fans, and even some of Reznor's long time fans. The transition from "The Fragile" to "With Teeth" is no different. In 1999, "The Fragile" was released to the masses. Reznor himself cites what many consider his "magnum opus" to be a failure, both commerically and personally. It's been revealed recently that Reznor was in a period of heavy drug use, and that's probably why he considers it a failure personally. As a fan of Trent Reznor & NIN, I listen to The Fragile now with a new outlook on the album. Before I thought it was a beautiful peace of art, with soothing instrumentals, and simple yet intelligent lyrics. Now, I only think of why there are so many instrumentals on the album, and maybe why the lyrics were a little to simple. 2005's "With Teeth" is a major leap forward., but more importantly, personally for Reznor. He is now clean apparently, after 3 or 4 years away from the spotlight. This album brings a whole new concept to Nine Inch Nails. The message of With Teeth isn't inevitable self-destruction ("The Downward Spiral"), or being stuck inside your own twisted head ("The Fragile"), it's about... redemption. After everything Trent Reznor has been through in his career, whether it be TVT Records Issue, The John Malm Court Battles, The Marilyn Manson Feud or the supposed Tori Amos affair, it's quite clear that Reznor has come out of all of that the better man, and has found a new path in life. Unlike the song title on Nine Inch Nails' "Still", Trent Reznor isn't leaving hope. No, he has found hope, and meaning, in his life once again. 01. All The Love In The World (5:15) The Good: - Trent has obviously been taking some vocal classes or lessons in his absence from the spotlight, and it shows. He sounds brilliant here. - It will become a re-occuring theme in this album, but he uses old lyrics from past songs, which I love for some reason. - Well, he's always been a god on the piano, that's for sure. The Bad: - I don't like the way he cuts off his own lyrics with the chorus. That pisses me off to no end. 02. You Know What You Are (3:42) The Good: - The way the song kicks into the chorus is pretty badass. As is the chorus itself. - I like the backing piano for the song. It's pretty much on every song I've noticed, which is class. The Bad: - Nothing, really. 03. The Collector (3:07) The Good: - The guitars are pretty bad-ass. I'm not tech geek when it comes to instruments, so sorry. I just know that they kick ass The Bad: - Yeah, uhh, I can see why some people question Trent's sexuality reading the lyrics for the chorus. And watching the video for Happiness In Slavery. - His vocals aren't to sharp here. 04. The Hand That Feeds (3:31) The Good: - Trent sounds like a fucking god on this song. Seriously. I'm not bias since this was the first new song I've heard from NIN in years. Not at all. - That synth solo. - Trent is as buff as a prison buff. The Bad: - Not the best choice for the first single, really. I think 2004 had enough political songs, what with that Green Day album and all. Don't drag it into 2005, damnit. - The video, but that's neither here nor there. 05. Love Is Not Enough (3:41) The Good: - I can't figure out if it's a synthisizer or guitar, but whatever the backing instrument in the chorus is rocks my ass off three ways from Sunday. - The lyrics, man. Keepin' it simple is good. The Bad: - I'm not sure I like Trent's vocals on this song that much. It's okay, but... yeah. 06. Every Day Is Exactly The Same (4:54) The Good: - The lyrics are great, in my opinion. I've heard some compare them to Linkin Park's lyrics, but whatever. They rock, goddamnit. - The first few opening moments to this song is awesome. 07. With Teeth (5:37) The Good: - Sounds like a primal drumbeat. That's really cool. - The chorus is awesome, no matter how corny it may be. - I like how you don't know if Trent is saying "with the teeth", or "with-uh teeth-uh". The Bad: - It's a little to long. Great song, yeah, but it shouldn't be damn near 6 minutes long. 08. Only (4:23) The Good: - Disco beat. - Spoken word is always nice, especially from Trent Reznor. He doesn't rap you fucking idiots. - "There is no you, there is only me". The Bad: - Sounds kinda cheesy the way he says some things ("Your world that is!", "And it worked... yes it did!"). 09. Getting Smaller (3:35) The Good: - Well, this might get some mainstream non-NIN fans to buy the CD. It's a straight up rock song, plain and simple. Haven't seen one of these since Last. - Fuckin' drums are tight. The Bad: - "Flip flop flip flop flip". Need I say more? 10. Sunspots (4:03) The Good: - This is the song that I fell in love with. I love some of the lyrics in this song, and the way Trent describes addiction like looking at the sun. Awesome. The Bad: - Probably won't be a single. 11. The Line Begins To Blur (3:44) The Good: - The rawest NIN song ever. Brutal shit. Maybe moreso than YKWYA. - The transition from singing Trent to screaming Trent. The Bad: - Probably won't be a single. 12. Beside You In Time (5:24) 13. Right Where It Belongs (5:04) The Good: - Yes, it's the new Hurt. In terms of musical style. Not in terms of song meaning and lyrics. The two songs are worlds away from being alike in that manner. - That piano and synth (in the background) is awesome. Really adds to the song. - The vocal effect on Trent's voice for the first few minutes is neat. The way the song tells a story through the way the song changes while you're listening to it is pretty sweet. The Bad: - Many fans will think it's better than Hurt, or compare it to Hurt, when the only thing that is anything like Hurt is the piano and whatnot in this song. - Probably won't be closing a show anytime soon. Then again, Hurt isn't closing shows this time around either, so... - They made a V2 of it. - They made a V2 of it. Overall Rating: 90/100, 4 Stars, Etc etc.
Great write-up, but some of the bad I actually like. Like in All The Love In The World, I like how, if you know Trent well enough (or listened to his music, rather) he doesn't even need to say the last word in order to say the last word. "I've become a million miles" What's next? And the cheesiness of Only owns me.
I love that. He cuts it off before he sounds cliché in the line "Sometimes I get so lonely I could...". If he had said "die", that would've sounded unoriginal, I think. That's my favorite part of the song other than the piano breakdown. Meanwhile, the worst part on the album is when he's saying "With-uh teeth-uh" or whatever variation of it. It goes right through me. Kickass review. If I were to rank the songs in order of my most favorite to least favorite, they'd go; 01:: Right Where It Belongs 02:: Every Day Is Exactly The Same 03:: All The Love In The World 04:: Getting Smaller 05:: Beside You In Time 06:: Love Is Not Enough 07:: Only 08:: Sunspots 09:: You Know What You Are 10:: The Collector 11:: The Hand That Feeds 12:: The Line Begins To Blur 13:: With Teeth Favorite moments; ATLITW - Cut-off verse leading into chorus, piano breakdown and bridge. When Trent sings really high during the bridge. TC - "Swallow it all, swallow it all, swallow it all, swallow it all..." THTF - Synth solo. The message. "I can see, but I keep holding on, and on, and on, and on.." EDIETS - The lyrics. Especially first verse. Only - The feel and beats. GS - The best guitars on the album. Especially during the chorus. The drumming is great too. Sunspots - Where Trent sings high in the chorus. BYIT - That one-note build-up until the guitars kick in is great. I get so pumped when I hear that. RHIB - Every bit of it. One of the more beautiful songs I've ever heard.
